Professional Development

My primary goal is to gain the knowledge, skills, and depth of thinking necessary to design factors and an environment that fosters interpersonal and collaborative skills in healthcare students that can be used in their real-world problem solving situations.

I would like to gain expertise that enables me to design an environment that:

  1. Promotes learner awareness of differing perspectives and protocols inherently present within each individual,

  2. Encourages learners to discover ways of constructively negotiating a shared understanding between members throughout the complex process that is providing optimal patient care, and

  3. Guides learners to create and normalize a culture of safety in all processes related in teamwork

My short-term goals are to:

  • Take part in larger scale interdisciplinary collaborative projects in the context of healthcare and beyond

  • Teach or co-instruct at least one course before the end of my program

  • Publish at least 5 journal articles in a related field (education and healthcare)

  • Take part in writing a research grant proposal

Projects

STELLAR

I've had the privilege of joining the STELLAR team and experiencing what it is like to work in a multi-institutional collaborative research project. Because of my background in healthcare, this project served as a bridge between my profession as a pharmacist and my new life as an LDT Ph.D student.

Throughout my first year, I collaborated with other members on a variety of tasks, such as:

  • exploring data visualization tools and techniques to communicate key aspects of data to audiences

  • documenting and organizing meeting notes

  • compiling data for presentations

  • taking part in an alpha test

  • reviewing and completing line edits for a manuscript

  • presenting posters at the Annual Georgia Clinical and Translational Science Conference

I'm excited for this upcoming year as I will have the unique opportunity to witness the process of writing a NIH grant proposal with our collaborators.

Medical Professionalism

I'm currently involved in an international collaborative research team, working on a study exploring the relationship between community-engagement project-based learning and civic-mindedness of first-year medical students in South Korea.

For this project, I was able to gain experience working in the following areas of the research process:

  • transcription of interviews

  • qualitative coding process

  • using SPSS and Excel to analyze survey data
